There are many ways in which expressions of sympathy can go wrong. Religious customs, specials requests of the bereaved, levels of familiarity with the deceased are things you have to consider when coming up with the best way to express your condolences. In most cultures, however, flowers are a safe way to go.
There are generally five kinds of flower arrangements you can send to the bereaved. If you're not part of the family, it would be wise not to get a casket spray. These are flowers that are usually placed atop the casket and traditionally, the immediate family is the one who asks for these. A spray, on the other hand, is a flower display that is not meant to be seen fully and is acceptable from fellow mourners who are not family. Only one side should be showing of a spray. It might be safest to go with a spray on an easel as it is the most mobile so it is easy to work it around whatever set-up the family has chosen for the service.
Sometimes, you can also to opt to send over a selection of flowers in a vase or perhaps a wreath. Flowers in a vase are your best option when you want your flowers to be available for multiple viewings. The flowers are then in water, helping them maintain their freshness. Some flower arrangements are also specially designed to be placed in the casket. Some florists also offer the option of sending special flower arrangements as you see fit, such as a floral arrangement in the shape of a heart or a cross, among others.
On a final note, don't shy away from vibrant arrangements simply because it's a funeral and you're afraid that your offering might be found inappropriate. Colorful flower arrangements are perfectly acceptable. While a service is a sad occasion with somber tones, it is also good to remind the family of the brighter side of the deceased's life. He / she may be dead, but that doesn't mean that you cannot celebrate his / her life. In times like these, it is good to bring a smile to everyone's face by reminding each other of the life that was lived and the moments that were shared.
